Sulphites are among the top food allergens. Symptoms include difficulty breathing, swelling of the throat, sneezing, hives, stomach pain, headaches, bed wetting, cough, fatigue, sinusitis, nasal polyps, hyperactivity, memory loss, and depression. Sometimes anaphylactic reactions can actually cause death by closing down the airway altogether, leading to cardiac arrest. Sulphites also destroy vitamin B12 (thiamin) which is essential for the metabolism of alcohol and carbohydrates.
According to the FDA, approximately one in 100 people is sensitive to sulphites in food. The majority of these individuals are asthmatic, suggesting a link between asthma and sulphites. Anybody with aspirin or salicylate sensitivities is at higher risk for these symptoms.
The Cosmetics Database notes that sodium metabisulfite, used in products such as moisturizers, sunscreens, cleansers and hair bleaches, may be toxic to the human immune system and may be a carcinogen.
