Sucralose (Splenda)


5.16splenda.jpgNo studies have been done on the safety of Sucralose (Splenda) on children.  

No human trial on the safety of Sucralose (Splenda) has exceeded six months.

The manufacturers say that 'hundreds' of studies have been done on the safety of Sucralose.  The Sucralose Toxicity Information Center maintains that these studies were clearly inadequate and do not demonstrate safety in long-term use.

Animal research has shown that sucralose can cause many problems such as:
  • Reduced growth rate.
  • Decreased red blood cells.
  • Decreased urination.  
  • Enlarged liver and brain (the manufacturers stated this was insignificant due to a lack of a dose response.)  
  • Shrunken ovaries
  • Shrunken thymus.
  • Aborted pregnancy
  • Diarrhoea

The manufacturers of Splenda insist that it is safe because it is eliminated from the body without having been absorbed. 
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA), however, has said that up to 27% of the sucrose ingested may be absorbed.  In Japan, the Food Sanitation Council puts the figure as high as 40%. 

A significant amount of this may be metabolised and accumulate in the digestive tract, liver and kidneys, according to the Sucralose Toxicity Information Center.  Long-term consumption of Splenda may lead to immune system and neurological problems. 

  • In an animal study by scientists at the Duke University Medical Center, North Carolina, USA, Splenda reduced the amount of 'good' bacteria in the intestines by 50%, increased the pH level in the intestines, contributed to increases in body weight and affected P-glycoprotein (P-gp) levels in such a way that crucial health-related drugs could be rejected.  The P-gp effect could result in medications used in chemotherapy, AIDS treatment and treatments for heart conditions being shunted back into the intestines, rather than being absorbed by the body. 
  • Jim Turner, chairman of the national consumer education group Citizens for Health in the USA, said that "...the artificial sweetener Splenda and its key component sucralose pose a threat to the people who consume the product.  Hundreds of consumers have complained to us about the side effects from using Splenda... the chemicals in the little yellow package should carry a big red warning label".

    It is important to note that there is no independent monitoring of the effects of sucralose consumption on human health.
